Rivanna Solar is a 12.5 MW-AC solar project (is equivalent of 1,800 homes) in Albemarle County, VA. Of the total 149 acre property, 90 acres will be used for solar farming consisting of approximately 38,000 solar panels. Solar panels would lie horizontal on posts, approximately six feet above the ground and would tilt from east to west through the day to orient the panels to the sun. Electricity generated would be transferred to the adjacent Dominion Virginia Power substation for use in the general electrical grid. Site is a rural landscape characterized by large farm and forest properties, with some small lot residential on side of road. The valley and large floodplain of Buck Island Creek lie just to the south of the site. The site is located on route 53, a major access route to Monticello and James Monroe’s highland. There are two overlay districts of entrance corridor and flood hazard. The development within entrance corridors should reflect elements of design characteristic of the significant historical landmarks, buildings and structures of Charlottesville and Albemarle area to promote orderly and attractive development within these corridors.
