Ivy Solar

Ivy Landfill Solar is proposed on top of landfills at the Ivy Material Utilization Center (MUC) west of Charlottesville. It will include 8,064 panels covering 15-16 acres and produce 3 megawatts of energy to power approximately 750 homes. As Ivy MUC will maintain its waste and recycling services on site, the solar project is an additional passive use of the land. This is a prime opportunity to strategically implement a planting plan that supports wildlife, pollinators, birds, and native Piedmont plants. Dominion Energy will fund the project and Community Power Group will manage it. Rivanna Solid Waste Authority operates the Ivy MUC site and is leasing the solar field site to Community Power Group for a 35-year period. The project is part of a major push by Dominion Energy to repurpose unused land for solar panels to meet its goal of powering four million Virginia homes with solar power in 15 years. The Ivy Landfill Solar site is zoned for General Agriculture but has been granted a special use permit for Commercial Solar by Albemarle County and was cleared by the State Corporation Commission. The site is in a rural area and assessments have determined that it will have minimal effects on neighboring parcels. Assessments of the site included visual line of site, glare, environmental impact, and real estate prices. The project is due to start construction in 2024 and is estimated to be running by 2025.
